About The Position

At TriHealth, the mission is to improve the health of the people served—every patient, every day. The CARES Program (Center for Abuse and Rape Emergency Services) is a specialized, trauma‑informed service line dedicated to supporting victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse, and human trafficking. As a Registered Nurse with CARES, you will play a vital role in delivering compassionate care and meticulous forensic documentation that supports both healing and justice, making a meaningful impact at critical moments in a patient’s life. This role offers work in a high-impact specialty supporting survivors of interpersonal violence, joining a collaborative CARES team embedded within TriHealth’s respected emergency services environment. It provides opportunities to build advanced skills in forensic nursing, trauma-informed care, and multidisciplinary coordination, along with ongoing education, professional development, and specialty certification within a supportive nursing culture that champions safety, compassion, and evidence‑based practice. This position applies the nursing process in providing direct and indirect holistic care to patients and their families, collaborating with physicians and other health care team members, and may delegate certain aspects of care within the scope of nursing practice.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree or Diploma in Nursing.
  • BSN required within 5 years of hire.
  • Registered Nurse (RN), active and unencumbered.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association certification.
  • Minimum 6 months clinical nursing experience.
  • Strong clinical judgment grounded in biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences.
  • Knowledge, judgment, and skills derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to meet complex health care needs at various stages of the life cycle.

Nice To Haves

  • Membership in related professional organizations (e.g., IAFN).
  • Prior experience with forensic nursing, ED, women’s health, or trauma care.
  • RNs with more than 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time acute care experience.
  • Certification in specialty.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to on-call needs quickly and arrive on-site within established TriHealth timeframes.
  • Provide trauma‑informed forensic nursing care for patients age 14+ experiencing abuse or violence.
  • Perform comprehensive forensic examinations, evidence collection, documentation, and maintain chain of custody.
  • Collaborate effectively with ED clinical teams, advocacy agencies, and law enforcement to coordinate patient-centered care.
  • Use assessment skills to identify physical, emotional, cultural, and psychosocial needs.
  • Deliver safe, accurate clinical care and treatments following policy and professional standards.
  • Document all findings in CARES records and communicate case details to the CARES Coordinator.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, peer review, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform initial and ongoing assessment of patient and family, including health counseling and health teaching needs.
  • Plan care for patient and family based on assessment, standards of care, and optimal specific outcomes, including discharge planning.
  • Provide a safe, therapeutic environment, maintaining patient’s autonomy, dignity, and rights, and sensitivity to patient diversity.
  • Seek resources to help formulate ethical decisions and balance priorities of the patient's needs and those of the unit/facility.
  • Recognize emergency situations and take appropriate action.
  • Complete patient assignment including documentation within scheduled timeframe.
  • Base interventions on clinical data and desired outcomes and document accordingly.
  • Train/educate other staff and act as an expert resource in specialty area through abilities in existing and newer knowledge and skills.
  • Effectively communicate and understand/execute physician orders.
  • Evaluate the plan of care for patient based on optimal specific patient outcomes.
  • Document the patient/family response to care including teaching.
  • Collaborate with the patient/family and with other members of the health care team, including physicians, to revise plan of care as needed.
  • Supervise the care that was delegated to other health care team members.
  • Perform technical skills according to policy and procedure and accepted standards within their area of practice.
  • Safely administer medications/treatments and monitor their effects.
  • Use all equipment in a safe, appropriate manner.
  • Identify areas for self-improvement, function in relief charge / resource role as requested, complete assignments within scheduled timeframes, cooperate with instructor to facilitate effective learning experiences for students, maintain current knowledge in area of practice, demonstrate knowledge of organizational and department changes.
