Location: Mary Brigh 5CF (MB5CF), Cardiovascular Surgery (Progressive Care) Patient Care Type: A surgical cardiovascular progressive unit that serves adult and pediatric patients. All patient rooms have ECG monitoring with rhythm identification and interpretation being one area of responsibility assumed by the nursing staff. Additional monitoring services available to meet patient needs are SpO2 monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure and arrhythmia detection. Bed #: 37 Nursing Team Roles: Pulmonary care, promoting independence in activities of daily living, and emotional support along with extensive patient education and discharge planning are aspects of professional practice on MB5CF. The nursing process is utilized along with the primary care delivery system. Coronary bypass grafts, valve repair/replacements, left ventricular assist devices, and congenital anomaly repairs generally comprise the patient census, which draws local, national, and international clients. In addition, medical-surgical patients needing ECG monitoring are placed on MB5CF. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.
