The Acute Care Cardiology Unit (ACCU) is an integral part of the Heart Institute and provides comprehensive cardiac care for complex medical and surgical patients. ACCU cares for patients ages newborn to adults, including those with heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, heart and multi-organ transplants, post-procedural care, and congenital heart disease. Therapeutic modalities include noninvasive monitoring, cardiac telemetry, oxygen therapies, feeding tubes, central line access, inotropic/anticoagulation/antiarrhythmic drug therapy, NIRS, and complex drainage tube management. Patients may have additional specialty mechanical pumps, including mechanical circulatory support devices such as the Berlin Heart, the SynCardia total artificial heart, and the HeartMateIII.
