About The Position

At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supportive to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen. Duties of a Registered Nurse may include the following but are not limited to: Coordinates the medical and nursing care needs of the residents with other disciplines and departments. Ensures and provides direct care to the residents consistent with the comprehensive assessment, request of the resident and goals of the plan of care. Supervises and evaluates the effectiveness of the nursing care provided to the residents. Documents and updates the residents care plan regarding all changes and needs of the residents and assures that changes are communicated to all unit staff, including the evening and night shifts. Communicates effectively and respond appropriately to issues and concerns of residents’ families and staff. Assesses the daily needs of the residents and assign the appropriate staff to meet the nursing care needs of the resident on assigned shift. Initiates and participate in residents/family educational programs. Effectively communicate with nursing supervisor and nursing staff all pertinent data and information relevant to nursing resident care. Participates in the clinical in service for the nursing staff including the certification of nursing assistants, orientation of nursing employees and skill development consistent with the needs of the residents on all shifts. Acts as a professional role model for staff and nursing students assigned to the nursing unit. In collaboration with Nurse Managers, assumes 24-hour responsibility for the overall management and coordination of the resident care for one unit. Actively participates in the development and evaluation of standards of nursing practice and the quality of nursing care provided to the residents including participation in quality assurance studies. Provides counseling to unit staff on a one-to-one basis. Evaluates staff on their performance. Performs all other nursing duties assigned by nursing management.

Requirements

  • NYS Registered Nurse License
  • Two years of post-licensure clinical Nursing experience working with a geriatric population.
