About The Position

The Clinical Dietitian provides ongoing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) care for the entire hospital inpatient census, through screening, prioritizing, assessing, and recommending interventions. The role adapts daily workflow to accommodate fluctuations in patient load due to daily census variations, consults, acuity, and staffing challenges. The Clinical Dietitian develops and implements a plan of care for patients based on an expert assessment of life cycle- and diagnosis-specific nutritional needs, which includes reviews of medical history and laboratory data, patient interviews, and physical examinations to determine the current nutritional status of inpatients and/or outpatients. This position also involves documenting medical nutrition therapy plans in the electronic medical record to support clinical documentation and coding standards to maximize reimbursement rates.

Requirements

  • Dietitian certification issued by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Dietitian (RD) registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Licensure by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IL only).
  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree or Graduate Degree in relevant field.
  • Successful completion of ACEND accredited supervised practice program.
  • Didactic experience in clinical nutrition from an ACEND approved program.
  • Advanced knowledge in clinical nutrition and Nutrition Focused Physical Exams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organization, decision-making, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides ongoing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) care for entire hospital inpatient census.
  • Adapts daily workflow to accommodate fluctuations in patient load.
  • Develops and implements a plan of care for patients based on nutritional needs.
  • Documents medical nutrition therapy plan of care in the electronic medical record.
  • Prescribes enteral and parenteral nutrition support orders.
  • Evaluates patient tolerance and effectiveness of formulas.
  • Collaborates with physicians and pharmacy for specialized nutrition support.
  • Communicates with Pharmacy Integrated Clinical Services team for TPN infusions.
  • Prescribes orders for therapeutic diets and nutrition support regimens.
  • Partners with patient services team to ensure patient intake aligns with nutrition prescription.
  • Develops patient-specific menus for patients with complex dietary needs.
  • Leads efforts to identify, treat, and prevent malnutrition.
  • Provides medical nutrition therapy education to patients.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) efforts.
  • Supports department clinical initiatives to ensure compliance with safety initiatives.
  • May provide clinical support to various hospital-based outpatient programs.
  • Precepts dietetic graduate students and medical residents.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team rounds and care conferences.
  • Assists with transition to home or outside facilities for nutrition needs.
