About The Position

Under the supervision of the Dental Department Director, the Registered Dental Assistant will aid the Dentis using appropriate dental procedures during patient care. The RDA will also prepare operatory areas for patient visits as well as sterilize and restore operatory areas after use to maintain equipment, supplies and inventories.

Requirements

  • Certificate of Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) currently licensed by the California State Board of Dental Examiners; or evidence of being engaged in study leading toward the RDA Certificate
  • Certificate of radiation safety examination, California State Board; or evidence of ability to study for the certificate.
  • Certificate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) currently renewed; or evidence of ability to study for the certificate.
  • Certificate of coronal polishing; or evidence of being engaged in study leading to this certificate.
  • Must be sensitive to the needs of the Native American Indian community, their culture, traditions, and background.

Responsibilities

  • Operate dental radiographic equipment for the purpose of oral radiography if the Dental Assistant has complied with the requirements of section 1656 of the Business and Professions Code.
  • Take impressions for diagnostic and opposing models.
  • Application of non-aerosol and non-caustic topical agents as directed by the dentist.
  • Assist Dental Providers in the administration of nitrous oxide when used as an analgesia or sedation.
  • Hold anterior matrices.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Give patients home care instructions following dental procedures.
  • Apply topical fluoride after scaling and polishing by the supervising Dentist or a Registered Dental Hygienist.
  • Inspect the oral cavity using a mouth mirror and record and chart obvious dental findings (restorations and teeth present).
  • Size stainless steel crowns, temporary crowns, and bands, using proper procedures; ensures accuracy of sizing.
  • Removal of cement after placing temporary crowns
  • Placement of orthodontic separators.
  • Place arch wires and ligatures.
  • Perform coronal polishing as outlined by ADA standards and etc. (this expanded RDA function requires special study and Board certification before it may be done).
  • Assist in the operating procedures of the Dental Department as needed.
  • Prepare dental operatory areas for each dental treatment.
  • Be familiar with dental materials (mixtures, solutions, chemicals) and how to prepare them for the dental treatment.
  • Understand dental nomenclature (tooth numbers, positions and surfaces) and dental terminology.
  • Present oral hygiene instructions and nutrition counseling to the patient.
  • Dental Assistants shall have passed the certification examination for the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or shall be engaged in study leading toward the (RDA) Certificate. Maintenance of the California State RDA certificate requires proof of 25 units of relevant courses of study every two years. The Dental Assistants shall learn the maintenance functions of the Dental Receptionist's duties, by on-the-job training and by appropriate courses of study.
  • Placement of dental sealants.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Electronic Dental Records
  • Perform other job-related duties as directed by the Supervising Dentist.
