About The Position

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) provides direct behavioral therapy services to children with neurodevelopmental and medical complexities in an inpatient hospital setting. Under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), the RBT implements behavior intervention plans, collects data, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support patient care and recovery.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in working in an Applied Behavior Analysis setting.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience working with children with autism or developmental disabilities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong observational and data collection skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Compassionate, patient, and adaptable to changing clinical needs.

  • Proficiency in behavioral de-escalation techniques and crisis prevention strategies.
  • Adaptability to changing patient needs and hospital routines.
  • Commitment to ethical standards, patient safety, and trauma-informed care.
  • Active Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification through the BACB.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) from American Heart Association//American Red Cross required, must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from date of hire
  • Deescalation training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must maintain current certification in good standing during employment with this facility.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital, inpatient, or medical setting strongly preferred.

  • Collect and document real-time data on behavior, skill acquisition, and patient responses in a hospital EHR system.
  • Apply ABA techniques such as reinforcement, prompting, and shaping in a medically sensitive environment.
  • Monitor for signs of distress, pain, or medical complications and report promptly to clinical staff.
  • Maintain high fidelity to treatment protocols while adapting to the dynamic inpatient environment.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and contribute behavioral insights to care planning.
  • Deliver direct ABA therapy to pediatric patients in inpatient units under BCBA supervision.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to patients with co-occurring medical and developmental conditions.
  • Support patients during medical procedures, transitions, and daily routines using behavioral strategies.
  • Collaborate with nursing, child life, and therapy teams to ensure continuity of care.
  • Assist in crisis prevention and intervention using approved de-escalation techniques.
  • Provide basic nursing assistant care including hygiene support, feeding assistance, and mobility support.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition to nursing and clinical staff.
  • Assist with vital signs monitoring and routine patient care tasks as delegated by nursing staff.
  • Build therapeutic rapport with patients and families in a trauma-informed, compassionate manner.
  • Advocate for behavioral accommodations during medical care (e.g., visual schedules, sensory supports).
  • Educate caregivers and hospital staff on behavior strategies to support patient well-being.
  • Ensure patient dignity, autonomy, and comfort are prioritized in all interactions.
  • Support transitions to outpatient or home-based services with continuity planning.
  • Ensures all activities adhere to healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery.
  • Promotes a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
  • Adhere to BACB ethical standards, hospital policies, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation in both ABA and hospital systems.
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and incident reporting processes.
  • Follow infection control, safety, and emergency protocols specific to inpatient care.
  • Engage in regular supervision and performance reviews to ensure clinical integrity.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements.
  • Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments.
  • Participates in relevant workshops, seminars, and continuing education courses to stay current with industry trends, healthcare regulations, and best practices.
  • Complete hospital-mandated training (e.g., infection control, trauma-informed care, CPR).
  • Attend continuing education on ABA in medical settings, pediatric psychology, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Participate in case conferences, journal clubs, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
  • Maintain RBT certification and complete annual competency assessments.
  • Seek mentorship and feedback to enhance clinical and professional skills.
  • Promotes stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care.
  • Accurately log billable ABA service time in accordance with payer and hospital guidelines.
  • Support efficient scheduling and minimize missed sessions to optimize resource use.
  • Understand insurance and funding requirements for inpatient ABA services.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff to ensure authorizations and documentation are current.
  • Contribute to cost-effective care by using materials and time efficiently.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
