Location Requirement This role requires travel between all three Loyola Medicine ministries: Loyola University Medical Center, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, and MacNeal Hospital. What You’ll Do The English/Spanish Interpreter provides accurate, professional medical interpretation services for patients, families, physicians, and members of the healthcare team in accordance with the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Standards of Practice. This role supports effective communication during medical consultations, diagnostic testing, procedures, and the informed consent process. The interpreter also assists with explaining organizational policies, including visiting guidelines, parking information, and visitor services, ensuring patients and families clearly understand their care experience. Key responsibilities include assessing patient comprehension, facilitating culturally sensitive communication, and serving as a cultural liaison when appropriate. The interpreter documents all interpretation encounters thoroughly, including the location, duration, and nature of the interaction, in compliance with departmental standards. Documentation also includes instances in which patients decline interpretation services. In addition, this role maintains accurate productivity and workload records, responds to multiple interpretation requests with sound judgment and prioritization skills, and actively participates in department meetings and required in-service training. The interpreter consistently demonstrates professionalism and upholds the mission and values of Loyola Medicine.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school education or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two years of professional interpreter experience in a medical setting.
  • Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially, both receptive and expressive, using medical terminology as appropriate.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write proficiently in both English and the target language.
  • Must be able to achieve a rating of Advanced/High on the ACTFL testing scale, or equivalent.
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary, team environment.
  • Flexibility in response to changes in service provision demands.
  • Knowledgeable about the issues of cultural competency and healthcare disparities.
  • Adaptable and sensitive in cross-cultural situations.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and customer service skills.
