About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. The Construction Technician (Maintenance/Construction Technician I) is an entry‑level role designed for individuals who are eager to begin a career in the maintenance and construction trades. No prior experience is required. Success in this position is driven by a positive attitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn. In this role, you will receive hands‑on training and gain valuable experience in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of general building systems, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and related equipment.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
  • a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • May require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic to general knowledge of the principles and techniques of assigned trades.
  • Basic knowledge of general maintenance and building repair.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to work.
  • Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with basic construction, installation, and repair tasks under the direction of senior technicians.
  • Learn and follow safety procedures, tools, and techniques used in building maintenance and construction.
  • Perform routine inspections and report maintenance needs or equipment issues.
  • Support troubleshooting and repair of plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and general facility systems.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and orderly condition.
