About The Position

The Regional Assistant Foreman is responsible for the safety, training, track protection and assistance of employees and contractors under their supervision. This role involves performing manual labor in all types of weather, maintaining and documenting assigned sections of track, and potentially performing maintenance duties system-wide. The position requires monitoring train movements and weather conditions, assisting in track inspection, and being available for emergency and overtime work. The foreman is also responsible for all tools, track material, equipment, track machines, and vehicles used on their assigned section. They must be able to supervise a crew in track restoration, renewal, maintenance, and new construction, and will perform work as directed by Northern Plains Railroad.

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform manual labor in all types of weather.
  • Must have the ability to supervise a crew in restoration, renewal, maintenance, and new construction of track structures.
  • Must have the ability to recognize any deviation from track safety standards and prescribe and perform remedial action.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety rules, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to work as a team.
  • Travel required (Regional 25%).
  • GED or higher.
  • 6 months or more with working a railroad.
  • Driver's License required.
  • Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPRS driver provisions.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Certificate (Med Card).
  • Pass a mandatory drug test.
  • Undergo a thorough physical examination.
  • Provide professional references.
  • Complete a comprehensive background check.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all extreme weather conditions.
  • Must wear appropriate safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats, safety footwear, and hearing protection as required.
  • Must be able to perform on uneven or slippery surfaces, platforms, ladders, equipment in all weather and temperature conditions.
  • Most of the day could be spent on feet standing.
  • Eye/hand coordination, hand/feet dexterity and grasping hand tools, materials & equipment is required.
  • Perform manual labor & physical activities that require considerable use of the whole body, such as standing and lifting from various levels.
  • Ability to sit occasionally.
  • Ability to stand continuously.
  • Ability to walk frequently (Distance: 600 ft).
  • Ability to bend/stoop frequently (2 min).
  • Ability to sit while twisting & reaching above shoulder level occasionally.
  • Ability to crawl rarely (10 ft).
  • Ability to squat frequently (10 reps).
  • Ability to climb stairs occasionally (YMCA Step Test).
  • Ability to climb ladder occasionally (30 rungs).
  • Ability to balance continuously (CTSIB-M test).
  • Ability to reach forward frequently.
  • Ability to reach overhead arm ’s length frequently.
  • Ability to reach low level frequently.
  • Ability to perform static push force 50# at shoulder level frequently.
  • Ability to push/pull 90# force at waist level (simulate throw a switch) occasionally.
  • Ability to shovel occasionally.
  • Grip strength min. 50# occasionally.
  • Gross & fine coordination occasionally.
  • Ability to lift/carry <10# occasionally.
  • Ability to lift/carry 11-24 # occasionally.
  • Ability to lift/carry 25-34 # occasionally.
  • Ability to lift/carry 35-50 # rarely.
  • Ability to lift 50 # waist to crown rarely.
  • Hearing acuity.
  • Speech ability.
  • Vision acuity (Snellen/Ishihara/Perimetry).

  • Class A non-tractor trailer CDL preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the safety, training, track protection and assistance of employees and contractors under their supervision.
  • Perform manual labor in all types of weather.
  • Perform any remedial action recommended by track foreman through job briefings.
  • Be responsible for maintenance and documentation of assigned section of track.
  • May be called to perform maintenance duties system wide on NPR per Roadmaster or Track Inspector.
  • Monitor train movements and weather conditions.
  • Assist in performing track inspection in coordination with the track inspector.
  • Be subject to emergency and overtime work and inspections.
  • Be responsible for all tools, track material, equipment, track machines and vehicles in use on the assigned section of track.
  • Wear all safety equipment required by NPR while performing duties.
  • May be called on to perform work other than track maintenance.
  • Supervise a crew in restoration, renewal, maintenance, and new construction of track structures.
  • Perform work on Northern Plains Railroad as directed.
