About The Position

This is heavy manual work in collecting garbage and refuse. Work involves performing heavy manual work in the collection of garbage, refuse, trash, and recycling on residential routes. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision. A CDL is NOT required for this Seasonal position; this is an excellent opportunity for a candidate to learn the ropes with the DPW team! Many of our Seasonal employees go on to full time employment with the City. Up to 40 hours per week; Work hours are typically 5:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 days.

Requirements

• Some knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions of the work.
• Some knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of garbage trucks.
• Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees.
• Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner.
• Physical strength sufficient to lift and carry heavy objects over a long distance under adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Picks up and carries medium to large-sized containers in front of houses on an established route.
• Picks up trash in other areas as directed.
• Dumps container into truck, ensuring that all refuse is deposited in the truck.
• Cleans area around truck and container.
• Returns empty container to its proper place.
• Performs related work as required.
