The Refrigeration Control Engineer (RCE) position at Columbia University is a critical role within the facilities department, responsible for ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of the District Energy System (DES) and associated systems on the Manhattanville Campus. The RCE will perform routine and emergency operations, troubleshoot and repair equipment, and maintain compliance with safety and environmental regulations. This position requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.

  • Perform daily refrigeration & controls engineering assignments as required by maintenance and job orders.
  • Maintain, repair, and operate system controls and refrigeration equipment, auxiliary systems, and computer monitoring systems.
  • Conduct start-up, shutdown, and stabilization of units to maintain efficient service.
  • Conduct regular inspections of MERs, chiller systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure proper operation and maintenance.
  • Monitor, document, and control refrigerant on campus to comply with USEPA, NYSDEC, and NYCDEP standards.
  • Operate and maintain electric chillers, steam turbine chillers, condensate pumps, and other associated equipment.
  • Make daily operating decisions and take appropriate action in emergencies.
  • Perform preventive and proactive maintenance on equipment and systems.
  • Assist and direct mechanics and technicians in troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Monitor and respond to the building management system (BMS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).
  • Process paperwork including work orders, inventory, and preventive maintenance forms.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • NYC Refrigeration Engineer's License.
  • Three years of internal experience as a Refrigeration Control Engineer - Level 2 or seven years of external equivalent experience as an HVAC&R mechanic.
  • Six years of experience operating a chiller plant under active license and certifications.
  • Knowledge of various types of chillers, HVAC&R controls, and operating knowledge.
  • Two years of experience with automated systems controls.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Hold and maintain an active Motor Vehicle Class D License.
