The Referral Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to assist the Special Care & Geriatric faculty with patient care management across various service areas. This position serves as liaison between UNCHCS providers and ASOD to provide timely consultations, evaluations, and medical clearance needs. This position ensures the efficient patient coordination of the Special Care & Hospital Oral Medicine group. This position is responsible for scheduling patients who require specialized treatment for organizing and coordinating provider schedules. There are two components of this position: patient care and administration. Patient Care – Serves as the primary point of contact for UNC Health providers for patients who need dental clearance evaluation and treatment for head and neck cancer radiation therapy, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, and solid organ transplants. This position is responsible for contacting patients treated in the Emergency Room setting to collect and update insurance information when notified by an attending or resident about treatment rendered at UNC Health. Responsible for contacting referred patients and appointing them and registering them into all required systems. Frequently it requires communicating with the referring doctors to obtain all the required diagnostic reports, and scanning information into required systems so that files can be accessed by other staff. All relevant documents and information including faculty/surgeon notes must be communicated and disseminated in a timely manner. This position is also responsible for ensuring prior approvals are approved prior to treatment being rendered on the date of service. Additionally, this information must be disseminated to other providers involved in the care and treatment of the patient. This position is responsible for collecting co-payments and deposits for OR and clinic-based treatments. Administration – Assist the faculty/surgeon with correspondence and communication with referring health care providers. Validates and updates financial eligibility information for special programs (Ryan White, Veteran’s Leukemia & Lymphomas Society patients) on date of service. Provides front desk and phone coverage as needed; processes and routes prescription requests and ensures emergent, urgent, and acute issues are routed to providers in a timely manner.
