The Referral Coordinator is a remote, non-licensed position responsible for managing incoming referrals across multiple specialties—including Urology, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Podiatry, and General Surgery. You will serve as a critical point of contact for providers, patients, and insurers, ensuring insurance verification, referral processing, and documentation are handled accurately and efficiently. This position upholds confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA while playing a vital role in improving patient access and service delivery.

Requirements

  • Background in medical billing, insurance, customer service, and familiarity with medical terminology strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process referrals from EHR, fax, or phone and categorize them by urgency, escalating when needed.
  • Confirm insurance coverage, benefits, and referral/authorization requirements using payer websites or direct contact.
  • Upload and manage relevant documents in the EHR referral management system.
  • Submit necessary medical records to insurance for authorization and assist in ABN/waiver communication if services are not covered.
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians, insurance providers, and patients while documenting all interactions.
  • Monitor and address billing edits and worklists to ensure clean claims and efficient processing.
  • Train and provide coverage for the Authorization Specialist role and support onboarding of referral staff.
  • Help resolve referral-related concerns, especially where language or social barriers exist.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned, contributing to a collaborative and high-performing team.
