The Reference and Instruction Librarian at South Dakota State University (SDSU) plays a vital role in supporting the academic success of students and faculty by providing reference services, research consultations, and instructional support. This full-time faculty position is part of the Public Services team at the Hilton M. Briggs Library, emphasizing collaboration, outreach, and the development of information literacy skills among the university community. The role requires engagement in ongoing assessment and the ability to adapt to emerging technologies and pedagogical practices.

  • Provide liaison, outreach, and support to students, staff, and faculty in assigned disciplines to ensure collections and services meet faculty and student needs.
  • Provide both in-person and online reference service and research consultation, including some evening and weekend hours.
  • Participate in the library's instruction program, both in person and virtually, by teaching general information literacy skills and advanced subject-specific research skills to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Maintain current knowledge and understanding regarding scholarly communication, research, and pedagogical theories and practices, particularly as they relate to assigned subject areas.
  • Engage and participate in ongoing assessment of student learning, library collections, and services.
  • Collaborate with other librarians in the creation, implementation, and assessment of learning objectives for information literacy and student learning across campus.
  • Serve the library, SDSU, and the profession through committee work and other contributions.
  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science or equivalent by the time of hire.
  • Experience providing general reference service.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with issues and trends in libraries as well as higher education.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as a strong service orientation.
  • One or more years of experience working in academic libraries.
  • Ability to use software applications and tools to create instructional content.
  • Experience in instruction in face-to-face, online, and blended environments, including the design of interactive instructional materials and activities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technologies such as web authoring tools, social media, digital learning objects, screen casting, and LibGuides.
  • Additional advanced degree.
  • Academic background in a STEM discipline.
  • Coursework and/or experience relevant to providing advanced reference services and advanced database searching.
  • Coursework and/or experience in areas of support for faculty and researchers such as data services, research impact, open science, open access, evidence synthesis, STEM entrepreneurship support, or other.
