About The Position

The Recycling Site Operator performs manual labor dismantling freezers, refrigerators, and washers and dryers into various parts for resale, recycling, or solid waste disposal. The employee also receives, processes, and prepares electronics for transportation and recycling. Emphasis of the work is on participating, as necessary, in the performance of manual labor tasks of taking apart various case goods and separating various parts for processing. Duties also include accepting tires from residents and businesses and accepting commingled recyclables from the public; all in accordance with North Carolina statutes and County policy. Daily work is performed at the County's Recycling Facility and reports to the Recycling Site Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency.
  • Training and/or work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of performing manual work in recycling site operation.
  • Prior experience in the operation of a forklift or skid steer is required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Class B CDL license.

Responsibilities

  • Accepts electronics from the public, separates, processes, and prepares items for transportation, along with preparing packing lists that accompany each load.
  • Accepts tires from residents and businesses according to North Carolina General Statutes and County policy.
  • Accepts comingled recycling from the public.
  • Tends the collection facility office and determines residency, volume of load, and other determinants of charges based upon the established schedule.
  • Issues receipts and accounts for money received.
  • Prepares and maintains daily records necessary for proper reporting of revenues, traffic and disposal volumes.
  • Provides general information to questions from the public and directs traffic to and from the disposal site.
  • Conducts inspections of delivered materials restricted from dumping and/or materials that may create fire hazards.
  • Sets up and repairs protective fencing for property and recycling materials.
  • Monitors public access to recycling site to prevent scavenging of materials and promote safety.
  • Operates recycling material handlers such as front-end loaders, skid steers, forklifts, low boys, and other equipment.
  • Ensures that access roads and loading dock floor within the facility are kept clear of debris.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
