The Recycle Center Technician is responsible for overseeing the operations and maintenance of the City Recycle Center, including the management of compost materials and the operation of heavy equipment. This skilled lead position involves coordinating daily activities, ensuring compliance with waste management procedures, and providing customer service at the facility. The technician will work under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor and will play a key role in maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of the recycling operations.

  • Oversee the operations of the City Recycle Center.
  • Oversee the collection of electronic waste at the Recycle Center.
  • Coordinate the daily work of part-time and limited-term employees.
  • Provide customer relations at the site and oversee the implementation of waste dumping procedures, waste loading and hauling procedures, and the brush/tree processing operation.
  • Participate in equipment/building maintenance and repair projects.
  • Operate a front-end loader to create a material storage pile or to load materials onto transfer trailers.
  • Operate wood processing equipment and other specialized equipment such as forklifts, mowers, and sweepers.
  • Handle the distribution and repair of residential refuse and recycling carts.
  • Work in tandem with Building Inspection on refuse and recycling nuisance issues.
  • Operate snowplowing equipment as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • One to three years of experience in a public works, manufacturing, or related field.
  • Possession of a Class A Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License is required, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in public works.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and automotive operations (including large trucks).
  • Knowledge of laws and ordinances regulating such operation.
  • Ability to oversee facility operations and implement established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate heavy automobile equipment including semi-tractor/trailers, front-end loaders, forklifts, sweepers, etc.
  • Ability to follow written instructions including snow/ice maintenance routes.
  • Ability to work effectively with multi-cultural populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public, supervisors, and other co-workers.
  • Skill in repairing equipment including tire charger, hoist, and lubricating equipment.
