About The Position

The Recreational Therapist I at Western MA Hospital is responsible for developing and implementing therapeutic recreation programs tailored to individual patient needs. This role focuses on enhancing patients' physical, social, mental, and spiritual well-being through various recreational activities and community engagement. The therapist will work collaboratively with hospital staff and provide clinical training to recreation assistants, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles, theory, practice, and terminology of Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and document concisely.
  • Capacity to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Talent for establishing rapport with diverse populations.
  • Skilled in exercising discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work with special populations.
  • Ability to drive state vehicle/bus safely.

Nice To Haves

  • Skilled in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgement, discretion, and decision making.
  • Thoroughness, independence, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • CTRS certification (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist).
  • One-year experience in a health care facility.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, and facilitates various individual and group recreational activities.
  • Assists with community trips and special events such as the Patient/Family Picnic and holiday parties.
  • Provides clinical training and direction to the recreation assistants.
  • Partners with hospital staff to discuss program activities and resolve problems.
  • Provides leisure education to help patients acquire knowledge and skills for independence and social involvement.
  • Remains knowledgeable of technologies used to facilitate recreational activities.
  • Serves as a representative of the Recreation Department at various meetings.
  • Completes casework of recreational documentation to develop and modify treatment programs and goals.
  • Orders and maintains recreational supplies and equipment for patient use.
  • Attends professional meetings, seminars, and conferences to maintain knowledge of recreation therapy.
