The Recreational Therapist (CTRS) is responsible for providing evaluation and treatment to patients with varying diagnoses upon physician referral. This role involves assessing, identifying, and treating deficits related to leisure, social interaction skills, community resources, and community re-entry, as well as instructing patients and caregivers on therapeutic techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreational Therapy is required
  • Experience in an acute care, extended care, rehabilitation, mental health, or outpatient setting
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and coordinates recreation activities, functional leisure skills, and leisure education.
  • Interviews the person served to assess capabilities/interests/barriers.
  • Monitor progress and recommends changes modifications to program as required.
  • Plan and implement interventions to prevent harm to a patient.
  • Engage and instruct patients in therapeutic activities, such as games, sports, crafts, music, and group activities.
  • Observe, analyze, and record patients' participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions, modifying treatment programs as needed.
  • Consult with physicians and other members of the rehabilitation team regarding therapeutic recreation goals for program referrals.
  • Coordinate activities with staff/rehabilitation team and participate in care planning meetings.
  • Assess patients' needs through observations, medical records, tests, and talking with other healthcare professionals, patients’ families, and patients.
  • Create treatment plans and programs that meet patients’ rehabilitation needs and interests.
  • Confer with members of treatment team to plan and evaluate therapy programs.
  • Participate in discharge planning, development and implementation of activity care plans and patient assessments.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
