Job Duties: The Recreation Technician assists in operations within a greographic unit of State Parks, Fishing Access Sites, and river corridors. The position reports to the unit's Recreation Manager and provides support in administrative, operational, recreation, visitor use, and visitor services tasks while stewarding the natural, cultural, and historical resources. This position provides essential services and addresses tasks as they arise, such a visitor contacts, rule compliance, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, and other duties as assigned. This recreation technician patrols FWP sites for rule and fee compliance. Explains and interprets rules, policies, and laws to the public. Assists FWP Wardens and other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations within the park and fishing access sites. Informs visitors on preserving and mitigating impacts on historical, cultural, natural, and recreation resources. Understands enforcement authority and jurisdictional thresholds and who to call for assistance for a wide variety of situations. The position may assist in use monitoring and identifying recreational use trends within their assigned area. Recreation technicians provide front-line customer service to the public and diffuse recreational use conflicts. Technicians identify maintenance needs among sites and perform light maintenance duties and assist in other maintenance related projects as identified. A Recreation Technician works amongst a team of recreational and maintenance staff to accomplish agency goals and steward resources. Physical and Environmental Demands: Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment. Frequently works in adverse outdoor conditions including temperature extremes, snow and rain, dust, and mosquito infested areas. Works with public and may inform public of site rules and regulations. The position may require some travel. The incumbent will be required to work odd hours, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits
Familiarity with natural and cultural resource management including historical and current issues.
Must develop a working knowledge, including site location and available recreational opportunities for public recreational sites in the region’s jurisdiction. These include wildlife management areas, fishing access sites, state parks, forested lands, and major waterways.
Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Must be able to establish positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Must be comfortable communicating with dissatisfied visitors and helping to deescalate the situation.
Must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors.
Must have the ability to understand and effectively explain Department policies and regulations to the general public.
Ability to use tact, courtesy, poise, alertness, and good judgment in public contacts.
Must have basic computer skills: email, word processing, internet use, spreadsheet development

Nice To Haves

One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
