As a habilitation aide you are part of a multidisciplinary therapeutic services team of staff that is responsible for meeting the needs of each individual patient in order to assist them in returning to a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life in his or her chosen community. As a paraprofessional staff your services are directed by professional staff and guided by a clearly defined treatment plan. Using therapeutic use of self, you engage patients in recommended treatment activities and positive interactions by creating a genuine, professional, supportive relationship. Your responsibilities include patient escort to treatment areas, individual and group provision of treatment on and off grounds as directed by professional therapeutic services staff, patient monitoring for safety and observation of progress toward goals and target symptoms as well as documentation of the patient’s current condition. Treatment programs and activities may focus on rehabilitative (vocational), educational, or recreational goals and leisure opportunities. You are expected to demonstrate adaptability, creativity, enthusiasm, and compassion as you teach skills and provide patients with various opportunities for connecting with others and their community. Work is performed under general supervision of a recreation therapist.
