About The Position

The Recreation Therapist is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing therapeutic recreation and activity programs for residents in a skilled nursing environment and Alzheimer’s Memory Unit. The goal is to enhance residents’ physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being in accordance with individualized care plans, facility policies, and state/federal regulations. The Recreation Therapist also supervises recreation therapy volunteers and residents in collaboration with the Recreation Therapy Manager and the Director of Volunteers to ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work rotating weekends and evening shifts.
  • Energetic and creative individuals demonstrating leadership qualities in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license, and willingness to drive transport bus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or human service preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • knowledge of the geriatric population, including dementia care.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist / Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Certified Nurse Assistant with recreation experience, or equivalent credentials preferred.
  • C.N.A. experience an asset.
  • Recent education in related regulatory compliance and current industry topics preferred.
  • 2 to 3 years working with the senior population and Dementia care experience preferred.
  • Computer skills and electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates skill in coordinating activities, managing others, and has the ability to share information with appropriate audiences.
  • Develop individual care plans with measurable goals
  • Complete initial and ongoing recreation/activity assessments for all residents.
  • Implement large and small group activities as scheduled on a monthly calendar.
  • Transporting residents to all activity programs.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care plan meetings
  • Exhibits the ability to lead groups
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently and exhibits flexibility in decision making and prioritizing.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize job duties to ensure energies are appropriately placed for maximum benefit.
  • Actively guards the confidentiality of sensitive information including but not limited to the residents, staff, and the health system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
