About The Position

Garfield Park Behavioral Hospital is dedicated to providing behavioral health and psychiatric support to children and teens ages 3 to 17. Above all else, we treat every patient with compassion and respect. Using evidence-based treatment approaches and individualized care, we strive to instill hope in our patients, their families and our community. The Activity Therapist provides Art therapy, Music therapy, Recreational Therapy or Drama Therapy Services to patients in one or more programs of the hospital within the therapeutic milieu. Works as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning, implementing and evaluating individualized treatment plans. The Activity Therapist also provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Recreational Therapy or related field required.
• Master’s Degree in Recreational Therapy or Social Work preferred.
• One year experience working with a psychiatric mental health population, preferably in an inpatient setting.
• Expressive/Recreation Therapy Certification (or is certification eligible) preferred.
• Lifesaving and/or water safety instructor certification desirable.
• Knowledge of case management, discharge planning, group leadership skills, age specific growth and development, crisis and behavior management, family therapy theory and practice.
• Knowledge of theory and practice of psychosocial assessments.
• Good organization skills, as well as oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provides Art therapy, Music therapy, Recreational Therapy or Drama Therapy Services to patients.
• Works as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning, implementing and evaluating individualized treatment plans.
• Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
• Ensures the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu.
• Conducts crisis intervention.
• Facilitates activities of daily living.
