About The Position

NATURE OF WORK To act as a positive role model for our youth and staff, providing guidance and leadership, which will help develop positive self-esteem, a sense of fair play, cooperation, skill development and an understanding of the arts, physical activity and our environment. An essential part of the duties of this position is assisting in developing a flexible and anticipatory organization which will provide cost-effective and customer-friendly delivery of quality services to the community; plus assisting in developing and utilizing the potential of each employee to successfully meet both the short and long-term needs of South Windsor. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation the Recreation Supervisor of Youth Programs will oversee preschool programs, the 4th R Before & After School program at four elementary school sites and other contracted programs as needed offered by the South Windsor Recreation Parks Department (SWPRD).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct seasonal program planning meetings with direct program subordinate staff
  • Coordinate program information from program staff and compile for brochure preparation
  • Program a variety of activity-oriented classes for: preschool, youth and teens
  • Coordinate facility scheduling for all classes and activities responsible for
  • Coordinate program logistics with the Board of Education as needed
  • Assist in preparation of preschool and youth sections of seasonal brochures, this includes supplying detailed program information and proofing for accuracy
  • Promote programs through press releases, ads, flyers, etc.
  • Research and implement new and creative ways to attract participants
  • Assist with research and implementation of alternative revenue sources and resources
  • Prepare for and participate in registration for all assigned programs
  • Evaluate activity enrollments prior to the start of programs
  • Make necessary decisions regarding class cancellation, movement, waiting lists, and additions
  • Inform and/or communicate with program staff, parents, and SWPRD staff regarding changes in program offerings
  • Post program changes/status in office
  • Supply rosters to program staff and instructors
  • Print Activity reports as needed
  • Support and encourage program staff
  • Coordinate special events within division of responsibility
  • Develop and implement on-going in-service training program for program staff
  • Address concerns, questions and suggestions regarding assigned programs
  • Develop and manage contracted service providers agreements/contracts
  • Maintain room/activity space and their contents in healthy condition
  • Develop, implement, and monitor program budgets in accordance with department budget/goals
  • Assists with the administration and monitoring of all aspects of the preschool programs and 4th R Before & After School program
  • Supervises program participants as needed
  • Responsible for ordering necessary supplies and equipment within budget guidelines.
  • Control and maintain inventory
  • Provide feedback to Director, Assistant Director and other SWPRD staff as appropriate regarding health, safety and maintenance issues, etc.
  • Provide periodic verbal and written reports on programs (i.e. number of classes, class hours, enrollment figures, etc.)
  • Provide data and input for budgetary consideration
  • Adhere to guidelines and regulations set forth by State of Connecticut specifically, but not limited to, reporting of abuse, neglect, communicable diseases, etc.
  • Conduct formal and informal evaluations of programs, i.e. quality of programs, length of programs and classes, age appropriateness, themes, activities, etc.
  • Evaluates, ongoing, effectiveness of programs
  • Hire, negotiate contracts, restructure and/or eliminate and evaluate teachers, sub-ordinate staff and contractors as needed
  • Supervise program staff and contractors
  • Coordinate instructors' and contractors' schedules
  • Attain substitutes as required
  • Delegate effectively to program staff and contractors to ensure completion of responsibilities
  • Develop and conduct pre-season and in-service training programs
  • Inspects and maintains facilities and equipment (inventory) for safety and cleanliness purposes on a regular basis
  • Assists with planning and organizing the daily program. Implement schedules and lesson plans
  • Evaluates subordinate program staff members. Provides constructive feedback, implements discipline actions, and maintains accurate records on staff and campers
  • Responsible for maintaining and adhering to policies regarding petty cash, purchase orders and vouchers
  • Responsible for administering basic first aid
  • Inform parents of participants of daily calendar of events and any other vital information (monthly newsletters, notices, flyers, etc)
  • Responsible for the safety, accounting and grouping of children at all times
  • Positively enforces discipline problems and abides by Recreation Department policy
  • Responsible for filing and submitting incident reports
  • Performs related work as required
