About The Position

Recreation Specialist is a part-time position offering a flexible schedule. This position is instrumental in developing, implementing, and participating in a variety of exciting and engaging recreation activities. Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator/Supervisor, this position is a key role. Working at a variety of facilities and parks assisting in bringing our community together while providing well-rounded programs in culture arts, sports, crafts, and outdoor education, special events and after-school programing, working with people of all ages and groups, this position will allow experiences working with our community in a safe and exciting environment.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic objectives, methods, and techniques of planning recreation activities.
  • Arts and Crafts, Indoor and outdoor games and activities.
  • How to provide basic homework help for kindergarten – 6th grade.
  • The operation of basic office equipment.
  • Basic first aid and safe work practices.
  • Assist with planning and organization of a variety of recreation programs and events.
  • Appear for work on time, presentable and in clean uniform.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining recreational facilities.
  • Be a source of accurate information.
  • Exercise good judgement, courtesy, and tact.
  • Must understand and follow directions given in writing, verbally, or through diagrams.
  • Accept constructive criticism.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Effectively interpret and apply information from various documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Clearly and concisely write routine reports and professional correspondence.
  • Confidently deliver presentations to audiences such as customers, employees, or organizations.
  • Basic math skills: The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide is essential, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • A valid California Driver’s License or California Identification Card (or a School Id if applicable).
  • Proof of valid vehicular insurance (if applicable)
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification for Infant, Children, and Adults is required.
  • If you don’t currently hold this certification, you will be required to obtain it within 60 days of hire date.
  • Use your hands: This includes handling, feeling, and manipulating objects, along with reaching with your hands and arms.
  • Maintain various positions: You will be expected to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull & push objects, stoop, kneel, crouch down, or jump.
  • Lift and carry objects: Occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs. is required, with regular lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Vision/Hearing: This includes close-up vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to focus. Must be able to identify signs of distress in a variety of environments, using a combination of visual and auditory cues, or by utilizing alternative methods for awareness.
  • Maintain balance: Climbing or balancing may be required for some tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of education, volunteer work, or training that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this role.
  • One year of college level course work in recreation, sociology, social sciences, public administration, or a related field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience working with recreation programs and activities in a public agency setting and/or in group recreation activity leadership.
  • Experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-to-year basis.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge and software including Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Bilingual is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, organizing, promoting, and executing a variety of recreation programs, including music, dance, art, sports, social events, and games.
  • Adapt programs to meet the needs of our communities’ diverse populations, inclusive of all ages and groups.
  • Collaborate with other co-workers and supervisors to keep things running smoothly.
  • Assisting in answering phones and providing information.
  • Written correspondence, filing, making copies.
  • Assist with registration for classes and programs, processing facility reservations, paperwork and payments and maintaining program schedules by utilizing District software.
  • Maintains and prepares a variety of records, files, reports, including monthly calendars of activities.
  • Creates, designs, and distributes flyers and promotional materials for programs and events.
  • General knowledge of computer software, Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Answer questions and provide information about District programs and supplies.
  • Lead activities according to schedules and registration requirements.
  • Organize, officiate, and instruct activities for all ages. (sports, games, crafts).
  • Monitors spectators and participants at sporting and special events to maintain and enforce safety rules to ensure orderly conduct for a safe and fun environment at a variety of District parks and facilities.
  • Provides excellent customer service and public relations while representing District policies and procedures.
  • Provides guidance and acts in a lead capacity to those in subordinate positions.
  • Assists in training subordinates as it relates to assignments.
  • Identify and report equipment hazards or replacement needs.
  • Operate necessary equipment for activities.
  • Assist in ordering, receiving, storing and/or purchasing supplies to maintain an adequate inventory for program needs.
  • Attending and completing applicable online/in-person training sessions and orientations.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and take on new tasks.
  • Regular and timely attendance is mandatory.
  • Scheduled work hours may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
