Recreation Specialist - Transportation

About The Position

This job is responsible for coordinating and executing assigned transportation-related activities. Duties include developing, planning, organizing, and supervising transportation related assignments. Ensures the proficient operation of the Transportation Division. Duties also include assisting with other department programs as needed. Reports to the Recreation Program Director, Transportation Division. Works under minimal supervision; and can set own work sequence and pace within process and/or department limitations.

Requirements

Knowledge of the City and the Parks/Recreation and Cultural Affairs operations and functions.
Knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of this position.
Knowledge of how to develop and administer operations and staff plans and objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties of the City.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear and effective manner.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office software to include Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Ability to develop and administer policies, procedures, plans and activities and to monitor performance of subordinates against measured established goals.
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with, management, employees, and members of the general public.
Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in managing subordinates including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards, and resolving problems.
Ability to read, understand and interpret personnel and financial reports and related materials.
Associate degree in recreation, physical education or related field (Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).
1 year of recreation and/or transportation experience.
Must be certified in CPR and First Aid.
Must maintain a valid Drivers license.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education or related field plus 3-4 years of related experience, including some supervisory and/or managerial experience.

Responsibilities

Coordinate and provide transportation to: (1) children who participate in programs offered by the Office of Recreation; (2) seniors who participate in programs offered by the Office of Recreation; (3) City of Atlanta employees from various departments who request transportation assistance; and (4) Camp Best Friends participants.
Drive a City of Atlanta vehicle on a regular schedule, on an assigned route, and/or for special requests or occasions.
Safely transport all passengers – children, adults, senior constituents, and special guests.
Abide by all State of Georgia and City of Atlanta vehicle operation and safety guidelines; and obey all traffic laws.
Adhere to DriveCam stipulations while operating City of Atlanta vehicles.
Complete Unusual Incident Reports (UIRs) that may be required following an accident or incident.
Implement daily the following procedures when operating a City of Atlanta vehicle: (1) check City of Atlanta vehicle to confirm that all passengers have disembarked; (2) assist the disabled and elderly to embark and disembark on and off City of Atlanta vehicles if necessary; (3) instruct passengers about safety practices upon entering, while in transit, and upon exiting City of Atlanta vehicles; (4) maintain orderly conduct on City of Atlanta vehicles; and (5) document and report disruptive behaviors.
Oversee and ensure that the following vehicle maintenance standards are adhered to: (1) maintain a clean and sanitary City of Atlanta vehicle; (2) check the operating condition of a City of Atlanta vehicle before starting any trip; (3) perform a pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspection before and after route or trip; (4) report all mechanical issues to the transportation supervisor immediately; (5) keep an accurate record of daily mileage and vehicle condition; and (6) schedule periodic maintenance.
Foster a friendly yet professional relationship with all constituents and passengers.
Orders, distributes, and inventories all equipment and uniforms for transportation drivers.
Attend various workshops and meetings, council advisory meetings, and staff meetings as requested.
Interact with community groups and the public in the performance of job duties as necessary.
Maintain public relations by answering incoming calls and interacting – in person -- with the general public.
Prepare various documentation, participation reports, time sheets, and other reports related to the Transportation Division.
May serve as liaison for City of Atlanta with various local and national recreation associations such as the Georgia Recreation and Park Association and National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
