Click here for Important Facts about Information on your Employment Application Recreation Program Leader I/II Position Descriptions Department: Recreation Immediate Supervisor: Recreation Program Supervisor Pay Grade: $14-$17/hour FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Last Updated: (date) 10/26/2021 Position Summary These positions are responsible for the day-to-day operations of recreational programming. These positions will assist, plan, and help coordinate recreational programs such as sports, afterschool programs, summer camps, adult leagues and special events. On-going positions are available throughout the year; however, these positions will be filled on an as needed basis. Available Opportunities: Afterschool programs Youth and Adult Athletics/Sports Summer Programs Positions are available at various City of Elk River recreation facilities and parks. Ability to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends is required. Examples of Duties Seasonal Recreation Leaders provide information to the public; adhere to and uphold City/Parks ordinances, policies, regulations, and notifying appropriate agencies when necessary; make recommendations regarding facility and equipment repairs and safety; lead organized sports programs such as open play, tournaments, arts and crafts, special events, field trips, activity classes, and tutoring; perform additional related work as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Basic objectives of recreational programs. First Aid methods and safety precautions to be used in recreational activities. Principles, practices, and procedures used in rendering recreational and social community programs on playgrounds, parks, and in community centers. Ability to: Plan, organize, implement and participate in recreational and related activities. Keep accurate records. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Read and interpret rules, regulations and policies of recreational games and activities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Assist with Citywide events. Monitor all activities to ensure safety of participants. May be required to work evenings and weekends. Collects and accounts for money received for programs as well as keeps records and prepares reports. Perform related duties as assigned. Recreation Leader I - This is an entry level position that requires little to no experience working in a recreational program setting. Under moderate supervision, the Recreation Leader I organizes, conducts and assists in a variety of recreational programs and activities; performs related duties as required. This classification is further distinguished from Recreation Leader II in that it does not supervise staff groups but may provide direction to volunteers. Under supervision, the Recreation Leader I may be required to perform some of the essential job duties of a Recreation Leader II. This position may be required to work evenings and weekends. Recreation Leader II - Experience working with the public, parents and participants, or within recreational programs, including childcare or education. Supervisory skills and/or leadership experience are required. This position may be required to work evenings and weekends. License/Certificate : A current, valid, Minnesota driver license. CPR and First Aid Certificates required. (Certificate can be obtained at staff training prior to the summer) Working Conditions and Selection Process Environmental Conditions : Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities and public contact. Physical Conditions : Essential functions may require ability to work various hours and schedules including days, evenings, and weekends; maintaining physical ability and mobility necessary for: walking, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting or standing; heavy, moderate or light lifting; use of fingers, hands and arms for reaching, pushing, pulling; speaking and hearing to exchange information; visual acuity to read or observe and interpret information and events; and traveling to various work locations, and exposure to inclement weather.
