About The Position

The City of Renton is seeking an experienced Recreation Manager to oversee and coordinate the Recreation division. This role involves creating short- and long-term plans, developing and monitoring the division budget, and supervising staff. The Recreation Manager will be a strategic leader responsible for managing community centers, aquatics facilities, and year-round programs, ensuring high-quality services that meet the needs of a diverse community. The position requires strong business acumen and a commitment to equity and inclusion, with a focus on enhancing residents' quality of life through effective recreation programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Recreation Management, Community or Public Health, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation program management or related field.
  • 2 years' supervisory experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and driving record check.

Responsibilities

  • Manage recreation building operations, programs, events, and activities in the Parks & Recreation department.
  • Foster the development of community collaborations, partnerships, program sponsors, and leverage civic engagement opportunities.
  • Write and complete grant applications for special funding of programs and activities; confer with governmental agencies regarding various grant programs.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of a variety of records and reports related to recreation including budgets, grants, participation and safety.
  • Provide leadership and support staff to inter-departmental Special Event Committee.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop marketing strategies for division programs.
  • Evaluate and select contractors, consultants, and service providers; negotiate and enforce contracts and agreements for services.
  • Serve as the City's representative to committees and organizations; meet with public and private organizations regarding special event, sponsorship and partnership opportunities.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of web pages to support division efforts; research emerging technologies and trends.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development to staff.
  • Evaluate employee performance; conduct consistent staff and 1:1 check in meetings with direct reports.
  • Delegate, review and ensure timely completion of duties of assigned staff.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of department goals that support the City's Mission and Business Plan.
  • Train staff; set specific and measurable standards and goals.
  • Evaluate recreation operations to improve service, productivity, and efficiency, and resolve work-related complaints.
  • Ensure assigned staff regularly evaluate and recognize staff.
  • Initiate hiring process and coordinate the onboarding and training of new employees.
  • Prepare budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures and capital purchases.
  • Assist in the development and updating of City policies, ensure proper interpretation and administration of policies by staff.
  • Create an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by welcoming and meeting the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
