About The Position

Responsible for the direct supervision of a group of 5-11-year-old children in a summer day camp program. Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor, supervises assigned camp participants and assists with the implementation, leading, and monitoring of Summer Camp activities to provide quality recreational camp experiences for the children. Pre-summer training will take place between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. The position will start on June 11, 2026 and end on August 7, 2026. The Recreation Leader will be assigned a variable schedule that will typically require 4-6 hours per weekday between the hours of 7:30 AM and 7:00 PM. Schedules and hours will vary based on camp enrollment in 2026. All Camp staff must be available to start work on the first day of camp.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of recreational activities appropriate for school-age children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, parents, and volunteers.
  • Leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and take appropriate action to ensure children's and staff's safety.
  • Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations.
  • This is an entry-level position. A valid work permit may be required for applicants under the age of 18.
  • State law requires all selected applicants 18 and over must be fingerprinted and pass a pre-employment background check.
  • A TB test clearance is required for all selected applicants.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with children (volunteer work, babysitting, playing sports, coaching, etc.) is preferred (but not required)
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Training or willingness to complete/recertify (preferred)
  • Preferred possession of a valid class C California Driver’s license.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a sincere interest in providing each child with a positive summer camp experience.
  • Assists with the implementing, leading, and monitoring of Summer Camp activities.
  • Prepares, leads, and participates in recreational activities, both active and passive, for school-age children, such as games, sports, arts and crafts, and songs at an assigned day camp location.
  • Supervises and accounts for assigned participants at the day camp location.
  • Assists Program Lead as needed to ensure sign-in and out procedures are followed.
  • Demonstrates a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic attitude with the children, parents, and camp personnel in day-to-day activities.
  • Acts as a liaison between the parents, children, camp staff, Program Lead, and Recreation Coordinator.
  • Attends all preseason and ongoing staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assists in keeping the camp location neat and clean and all equipment and supplies in good order.
  • Follows District policies and procedures.
  • Follows safety procedures and renders first aid as required; responds to emergencies as they arise and follows emergency procedures; assists Program Lead to ensure that accidents and incidents are promptly documented and reported.
  • Actively encourage and live the District's mission.
  • Provide non-biased and fair direction to Junior Leaders, and act as a role model.
  • Communicate, delegate, review, and implement planned recreational activities.
  • Conduct regular safety checks of your area, and correct hazardous situations immediately.
