About The Position

Reporting to the Correctional Associate Warden for Programs, this position serves as the Recreation Coordinator. They are responsible for the overall recreational program for offenders in a state prison facility and must ensure that performance-based standards and expected practices are established and met. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of Prisons’ operations gained through work experience in a correctional facility
  • Documented knowledge of services available from the community and other public and private programs through work experience or personal volunteer experience
  • Documented work experience developing or supporting activities or events for a large group of individuals
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, Implementing, and maintaining the recreational program to include accountability of compliance for accreditation.
  • Developing a comprehensive annual recreation plan to promote the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of the population.
  • Recreation planning will include leisure time activities, structured activities, special activities and recognition activities that involve both the facility and the community.
  • Ensuring position responsibilities will include recreational activity planning and oversight; seasonal and holiday events; equipment and supply purchasing, inventory and distribution; evaluation of recreational areas; proper maintenance of equipment and areas; oversight of library access for all offenders (books and movies); and coordinating plans with staff and management.
  • Ensuring that offenders with disabilities and close custody and/or restrictive housing offenders have access to all recreational programs within their assigned restrictions.
  • Coordinating with community agencies to enrich programs, establish new programs, and work with community volunteers.
  • Supervising staff and offenders who work with the recreational programs but will not be responsible for offender caseload.
