About the position

The City of South Lake Tahoe is currently hiring a Recreation Coordinator to assist the Recreation department. New hires traditionally begin at step one of the salary range but there is the possibility of starting at a higher step with outstanding experience in the job class. The Recreation Coordinator plans, organizes, and coordinates a variety of programs, events, activities, and services in the Parks and Recreation Department, and trains and supervises the staff and volunteers involved. The ideal candidate will have supervisory experience, be comfortable creating and implementing recreational programs, be customer service oriented, and proficient with computer software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe. Applicant must be able to work a varied schedule as needed, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, schedules, implements, and evaluates a variety of programs including recreation programs, park ranger programs, youth programs, senior programs, aquatics programs, special events, campground, boat ramp, or golf course operations.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of program goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
  • Recruits, trains, schedules, evaluates, and supervises assigned staff under direct supervision of Recreation Manager.
  • Understands department policies and city personnel regulations; assesses information and makes recommendations where necessary.
  • Enforces policy and procedure within sphere of responsibility.
  • Conducts and supervises assigned program and special events, providing hands-on assistance or guidance when necessary.
  • Leads regular team meetings to engage staff, communicate work assignments, and keep staff updated on important department information and safety topics.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and members of the public.
  • Serves as a liaison between the city and other public and private agencies, citizen groups, and/or professional organizations.
  • Meets with public groups, clubs, organizations, and agencies to identify community needs, analyzes program demand, and prepares justification for recommended programs.
  • Prepares reports, maintains files and records.
  • Prepares purchase requisitions, orders supplies and materials, and maintains inventory levels for program supplies.
  • Assists in preparing and administering a program budget, monitors expenditures, handles daily revenue reconciliation of monies received and daily deposits for specific program area.
  • Provides clerical support, program registration, answers telephones, and responds to complaints and requests for information.
  • Ensures accurate and timely completion of assigned staff schedules and timecards.
  • Performs custodial maintenance work and sets up tables, sports equipment, chairs, and bleachers for classes and programs.
  • Opens and closes facilities as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, leisure studies, physical education, public administration, business administration, or related field.
  • Two+ years of increasingly responsible experience in a community service or Parks and Recreation program preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience in coordinating recreation programs, park ranger programs, youth programs, senior programs, aquatics programs, special events, campground, or golf course operations preferred.
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Effective computer skills.
