About The Position

The Recreation Attendant I supports the Parks and Recreation Department by assisting in the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of recreational programs and activities for youth ages 8 to 18. This position plays a key role in creating a safe, engaging, and welcoming environment that encourages participation, personal growth, and positive social interaction. The Recreation Attendant serves as a positive role model and mentor to participants while supporting departmental operations, facilities, and citywide special events to enhance community engagement and quality of life.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and a good driving record (must be able to operate City vehicles within three months of hire).
  • Food Manager Certification to be obtained within six months of hire.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification to be obtained within one year of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Bi-Lingual (English/Spanish)
  • Prior experience working with children or youth in a recreational, educational, or community setting.
  • Experience assisting with special events or group activities.
  • Customer service or public-facing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe, inclusive, and positive recreational environment for youth ages 8–18.
  • Plan, organize, and lead a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities, including sports, games, arts and crafts, outdoor recreation, and field trips.
  • Supervise participant behavior, promote positive interactions, and address conflicts or concerns in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating appropriate behavior, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with participants, parents/guardians, coworkers, volunteers, and members of the public.
  • Understand and effectively communicate the mission, goals, policies, and programs of the Parks and Recreation Department and assigned facilities.
  • Open and close community centers and facilities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly facility, including activity rooms, restrooms, storage areas, and office spaces.
  • Prepare and submit weekly program plans, attendance records, and required reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist with program planning, budget development, supply requests, and proper justification for materials and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of recreational equipment and supplies, ensuring proper use, storage, and reporting of damaged or missing items.
  • Lead and support smaller departmental programs and events such as Movies in the Park and Pop-Up Parks.
  • Assist with planning and execution of large-scale community events, including but not limited to Monster Mash, 4th Fest, and the Easter Egg Hunt.
  • Support program registration processes and respond to public inquiries regarding programs, schedules, and facility rentals.
  • Prepare facilities for weekend rentals and scheduled events, ensuring readiness, safety, and compliance with department standards.
  • Works the assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policy.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.

From 21 to less than 26 years of service – five weeks of vacation per year. From 26 years of service and up – six weeks of vacation per year.
