About The Position

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing beginning level work in the field of recreation including the performance of routine tasks. The incumbent assists in the conduct of a recreation program or activity. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a recreation or administrative employee of higher rank. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Assists in the conduct of a program at a recreation center or physical facility; Assists in the conduct of socials, dances, community signs, tournaments, special events, story-telling sessions, dramatics, parties, etc.; Assists with the officiating at athletics contests; Assists with the chaperoning of trips and other group activities; Assists in the instruction of games, sports, arts and crafts, dancing, singing, dramatics, etc.; Supervises the conduct of games and maintains order; Maintains schedules for sports and special events; Operates audiovisual equipment; Distributes and collects equipment and supplies. IF ASSIGNED TO A LONG -TERM CARE FACILITY: Assists in conducting various recreational activities for residents such as table games, parties, music activities, showing of films, making calendars and decorations, plus any other activities that arise out of special interest; Assists in chaperoning of trips and special events planned by recreation workers of higher level that arise out of special interest, community involvement or required by New York State Health Department; Assists residents at various programs in accordance with residents' reactions and capacity to participate; Records reaction and attendance for assigned programs; Develops and carries out programs for Sensory Stimulation Group with approval of Director of Recreational Activities. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS. ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the organization and conduct of one or more types of recreational activities; good knowledge of the methods of group instructions; ability to stimulate and hold the interest of participants; ability to render first aid; initiative; resourcefulness; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A) Completion of two (2) years of study at a two (2) or four (4) year college or university; or: B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in conducting organized recreational activities; or: C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). SPECIAL REQUIREMENT (for Employees of ECMCC): Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within sixty (60) days of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of employment. IN ADDITION, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ECMCC EMPLOYEES ASSIGNED TO IN-PATIENT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AREA: Completion of New York State Office of Mental Health-Bureau of Education and Workforce Development (BEWD) certified safety program within three (3) months of appointment and participation in annual re-training; Section 424-a of the Social Services Law requires the local social services district to inquire whether the applicant is the subject of an indicated child abuse or maltreatment report on file with the State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment. All potential employees for this position will be requested to sign the necessary clearance form prior to being advised that they will be hired. Refusal to sign will be cause for an automatic non-selection. NOTE: Your credit hours must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
