About The Position

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for a Recovery Technician, Eye Bank, in Miami, Florida. The Recovery Technician, Eye Bank retrieves and processes ocular tissue for surgical and research use

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews cases available for corneal removal and determines medical suitability of potential donors by reading and screening medical charts, and speaking to investigators, medical examiners, and law enforcement officers.
  • Retrieves tissue from legally consented donors using appropriate procedures.
  • Obtains donor’s medical information and completes all documentation required for donor’s record.
  • Performs specular microscopy on surgical quality corneas to obtain an endothelial cell count.
  • Preserves sclera tissue in cornea lab and processes and packages blood for serology testing.
  • Ensures that all necessary tissue has been graded and assists with slit lamp examination.
  • Trains residents, funeral directors, and new technicians on eye bank techniques.
  • Prepares instrument kits for sterilization, maintains storage supply, and assists in distributing tissue for research or practice.
  • Harvests whole eyes for pathology and maintains documentation of regular laboratory cleaning schedules.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
