The Records Consultant position at the Washington State Archives is a full-time, permanent role focused on supporting records management practices across state and local government agencies. The consultant will provide advice, training, and consultations, develop online educational resources, and assist in the development and review of retention schedules. This role is essential for ensuring efficient and economical storage and preservation of records, contributing to the Archives' mission of providing easy access to legal and historical records.

  • Provides advice and consultation to government agencies on archives and records management issues.
  • Independently conducts on-site consultations to assist customers with routine archives and records management issues.
  • Builds and maintains working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Promotes and facilitates the use of archives services by local and state government agencies.
  • Supports and assists the administration of the local records grant program.
  • Develops clear, concise, and easy to follow advice sheets, 'How-to' videos, forms/templates, and other tools for government agencies.
  • Researches legal issues and best practices for developing online resources/tools.
  • Reviews existing online resources to ensure they are up-to-date and relevant.
  • Identifies and recommends improvements to retention schedules.
  • Assists with the editing of records retention schedules and preparation of meeting materials.
  • Presents in-person training and webinars on archives and records management topics.
  • Organizes presentation arrangements such as booking venues and printing handouts.
  • Provides backup support to archives' research services and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Master's degree involving archives and records management, history or related field.
  • One year of experience in the functional operation of an archives and/or as a records management professional.
  • Ability to efficiently use a personal computer and applicable software.
  • Experience with records retention schedules, particularly in government.
  • Experience presenting training to small and large groups either in-person and/or via webinars.
  • Potential eligibility for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
