About The Position

Introduction: South Hills Interfaith Movement’s (SHIM) mission is to mobilize community resources and implement sustainable programs that compassionately help neighbors meet basic needs, achieve self-sufficiency, and build community. SHIM provides food, clothing, financial aid, education, family support, and a host of other services to 8,500 people in need in Pittsburgh’s southern suburban neighborhoods. In response to the unique challenges faced by the local refugee and immigrant population, SHIM operates programming designed to support children and families in this demographic. Job Summary: Deliver front-desk and client support services at SHIM’s Family Center, assisting diverse families—particularly refugees and immigrants—with resource navigation, administrative needs, and basic life-skills tasks. Manage calls, emails, and database updates while helping maintain an organized, welcoming center environment. Play a direct role in connecting neighbors to critical support programs and services.

  • Experience in strengths-based human service delivery approach
  • Associate’s degree and 2 years of related experience OR 4 years related experience
  • Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History (PATCH) through the Pennsylvania State Police
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History (PACA) through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services
  • FBI Criminal History Background Check (FBI Fingerprint); requires the individual to submit their fingerprints to the FBI and have the background check run through the PA State Police’s designated agencies
  • NSOR
  • Mandated Reporter Training

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist walk-in clients
  • Be welcoming to everyone who calls or visits the Family Center
  • Receive and answer general assistance calls to the Family Center main line and direct callers to the respective services across the agency
  • Connect families to social service resources (health, employment, etc.)
  • Assist families with basic tasks such as understanding school calendars, understanding mail, sending a fax etc.
  • Update family records in the database assisting with the maintenance of accurate case files
  • Be attentive and responsive to emails and Teams-keep track of meetings that you should attend and add to your calendar
  • Help keep the front lobby neat and organized
  • Assist with diaper distribution
  • Serve as a source of support for new refugees and immigrants facing challenges of adjustment
  • Recruit and engage new families for the Family Center
  • Other tasks as assigned
