About The Position

This position is located at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which features an 11 bed ICU specializing in the care of CVI cardiothoracic surgery patients. The unit is the only one for ECMO and serves as the alternate unit for medical Cardiology patients and 6MICU. The Receptionist Clerk serves as the front line to receive and greet patients and visitors for the Nursing Unit. This full-time position involves working variable shifts from 7 AM to 11 PM, including every other weekend. The Receptionist Clerk answers calls made to the nursing department, addresses inquiries, or forwards them to the appropriate area if unable to answer. Responsibilities include receiving and distributing mail, assisting nursing staff with data entry, managing unit supplies and equipment, and maintaining general office equipment. The role requires effective communication skills, excellent telephone etiquette, and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals. The Receptionist Clerk also manages admissions, transfers, and discharges, coordinates patient flow, schedules procedures, and monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms.

Requirements

  • High School graduate
  • 1 year previous receptionist experience preferred
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills
  • Organized and self-motivated
  • Knowledge of office procedures and equipment
  • Ability to meet essential job functions of the position

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and visitors for the Nursing Unit.
  • Answer calls made to the nursing department and address inquiries or forward them appropriately.
  • Receive and distribute mail to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist nursing staff with data entry as needed.
  • Maintain and order unit supplies and equipment.
  • Process equipment between patients as needed.
  • Operate and maintain general office equipment.
  • Demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills.
  • Manage admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Coordinate patient flow into/out of the area using department/unit specific software.
  • Schedule patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
  • Provide support for department/unit staff scheduling, including lunch assignments.
  • Monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms and perform safety/environmental rounds.
