The primary role of the Personal Trainer position is to provide one-on-one and small group fitness instruction to members of the Purdue community. Personal trainers utilize clients' health history, fitness assessment results, and goals to develop a specialized and comprehensive fitness program for each individual. Along with traditional training, personal trainers have the opportunity to run educational fitness programming such as Learn to Lift, Women on Weights, and have opportunity to aid in the instruction of our in house NASM Personal Trainer course. Typical hiring periods include Fall, Spring, & Summer semesters. The goal of this position is to give students valuable real-world experience in a fitness environment. This position should work 4-12 hours per week during the current semester. Those hours may be worked in any combination, at the discretion of the direct supervisor. The personal trainer position must be reliable, organized, responsible, and flexible. They must also be ambitious, detail-oriented, creative, and driven.

  • Provide individualized fitness assessments to determine client needs, goals, and current fitness levels.
  • Design safe, effective, and progressive exercise programs tailored to client's goals, abilities, and limitations.
  • Instruct and demonstrate proper exercise techniques to ensure safety, effectiveness, and correct form.
  • Motivate and support clients in achieving short- and long-term fitness goals through coaching, encouragement, and accountability.
  • Monitor and record client progress, making program adjustments as needed to ensure continued improvement.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized training environment.
  • Uphold industry standards and facility policies, including enforcing safety protocols and equipment usage guidelines.
  • Stay current with fitness trends, certifications, and continuing education to provide clients with up-to-date practices.
  • Build strong client relationships through professionalism, communication, and customer service.
  • Handle emergency situations and prioritize responsibilities while continuing to provide the highest level of customer service.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct when handling sensitive information.
  • Responsible for all scheduled shifts (based on class/exam schedules for the semester).
  • Must attend all scheduled staff meetings to gain and/or share pertinent information.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Candidates must hold a current nationally accredited personal training certification and maintain a valid CPR/AED certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexible and dependable with a strong attention to detail.
  • Problem solving, logic and reasoning skills.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.
  • Valid American Red Cross (or equivalent) Adult & Child CPR/AED for the Layperson, Standard First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Valid nationally accredited Personal Trainer certification.
  • Compensation of $16.00/hour.
  • Weekly average of approximately 4-12 hours per week.
  • Required hours may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
