Job Summary As the Real Estate Controller, you will oversee day-to-day accounting operations for a portfolio of properties, manage and mentor a team of accountants, and ensure accurate financial reporting in compliance with company standards and deadlines. You will be responsible for reviewing financial statements, journal entries, reclasses, and accruals, managing banking activity, supporting audits, and ensuring finalized financials are delivered accurately to leadership. This role requires extensive experience in property management accounting, exceptional attention to detail (including small variances), strong Yardi expertise, and the ability to lead accounting operations with confidence and consistency.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in real estate or property management accounting, including senior or supervisory responsibilities, required.
  • Strong, well-rounded accounting expertise with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proven experience reviewing financials, journal entries, reclasses, accruals, and managing audits.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee accounting operations and lead, train, and mentor a team.
  • Advanced proficiency in Yardi property management software required.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, high integrity, and a collaborative, professional leadership style.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Property Accountant preferred.
  • Experience with multifamily or commercial real estate portfolios strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting operations for a portfolio of real estate assets, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting.
  • Lead, train, mentor, and review the work of a team of property accountants.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reclasses, accruals, and all month-end close activities.
  • Ensure accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements are finalized and delivered to leadership.
  • Manage property bank accounts, reconciliations, cash activity, vendor payments, and check processing.
  • Serve as the primary contact for audits, resolving discrepancies and maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Utilize Yardi extensively while collaborating with asset management and operations to support property performance and budget analysis.
