About The Position

The Reading Specialist position at South Coast Educational Collaborative is a full-time role focused on enhancing literacy skills among students. This 12-month position requires the specialist to assess students throughout the Collaborative, identifying those at risk in terms of their literacy skills. The specialist will design and implement effective reading interventions based on research-based methodologies, ensuring that each student's unique learning needs are met. Communication is key in this role, as the specialist will regularly interact with Collaborative personnel and the parents or guardians of students to discuss reading levels and progress rates. In addition to direct student interaction, the Reading Specialist will be responsible for completing student evaluations and standardized testing in accordance with Collaborative guidelines. Daily service documentation is also a critical part of the role, as is the gathering, compiling, and disaggregating of data to inform instruction and link it to student learning outcomes. Differentiating instruction based on assessment data is essential, as is the writing of professional reports and the development of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) that reflect research-based best practices to demonstrate student progress and adjust goals accordingly. The specialist will develop and implement lesson plans, ensuring that there is written evidence of preparation as required. They will plan and utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that cater to the diverse learning styles and needs of students. Presenting subject matter according to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks using deep learning pedagogy is also a key responsibility. Collaboration with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods is expected, as is the use of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process. The Reading Specialist will serve as a positive role model for students, supporting the mission of the Collaborative while creating a conducive classroom environment for learning. Managing student behavior and taking necessary precautions to protect students and materials are also part of the job. The specialist will assist in selecting books and instructional materials, maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, and parents, and utilize effective communication skills to present information clearly. Participation in staff development activities to improve job-related skills is encouraged, and the specialist must stay informed of and comply with state and Collaborative regulations and policies for educators. Additionally, they will compile and maintain all required reports and documents, requesting support when necessary and fulfilling other student-related responsibilities as needed.
