The Reading Room Assistant at the an Library & Museum plays a crucial role in facilitating researcher access to the library's special and reference collections. This full-time position is responsible for ensuring the security and safety of these valuable collections while providing essential support to researchers and staff. The Reading Room Assistant will perform various duties, including managing the reading room desk, assisting researchers with their inquiries, and ensuring that materials are handled properly. This role requires a collaborative approach, as the assistant will work closely with colleagues across the institution to enhance the research experience for all users. In addition to desk duties, the Reading Room Assistant will be tasked with locating, charging, and delivering materials from the vault and closed book stacks. Daily responsibilities include re-shelving rare and reference materials, instructing readers and staff on the use of online catalogs and electronic databases, and maintaining accurate records of reader interactions. The assistant will also track circulation statistics and participate in stack maintenance projects to ensure the Reading Room remains organized and accessible. This position is vital for maintaining the integrity of the library's collections and providing a welcoming environment for researchers. The Reading Room Assistant will report directly to the Head of Reader Services and will be expected to perform other duties as assigned by the department head, contributing to the overall mission of the library and museum.
