About The Position

Under the direction of the Head Coach and in accordance with the mission statement of the YMCA of the Grand Rapids Area, the Assistant Swim Coach is responsible for conducting practices for assigned workout groups and attending team competitions. The Assistant Swim Coach will commit professional leadership to the achievement of the YMCA’s vision and core values and conduct personal and professional affairs in a manner that will exemplify the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This position requires morning, afternoon, and weekend availability.

Requirements

  • The Assistant Swim Coach must be at least 23 years of age (to rent and drive a vehicle out-of-state while on meets).
  • Swim Instructor Certification required
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for rescue (required)
  • First Aid Certification required within the first 30 days
  • AED-Oxygen Certification required within the first 30 days
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • Child Abuse Prevention training
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or scheduled form.

Nice To Haves

  • It is preferred that the Assistant Swim Coach have competitive swim experience at the minimum of a high school level.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles.
  • Ability to demonstrate aquatic skills.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • YMCA experience preferred
  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification preferred
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, or equivalent, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist coaching the team with functions related to swim team program.
  • Provide professional coaching with the goal of becoming American Swim Coach Association (ASCA) Level Certified.
  • Plan and execute daily practices for all ages and levels of groups assigned.
  • Communicate with coaching team, swimmers, and parents on progress of swimmers.
  • Attend meets on regular basis.
  • Practices Range: Monday-Sunday with flexibility to change with proper communication when needed.
  • Provide excellent communication and relationship building with team membership, board, staff, YMCA, schools, local businesses and other swim teams and coaches.
  • Provide leadership to swimmers and parents both at practice and meets.
  • Keep all certification up to date and attend all appropriate YMCA training sessions, including CPR and First Aid and COVID 19 protocol.
  • Display and exemplify the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of the job performance and in relationships with others.
  • Support goals and mission of YMCA
  • Develop programs for the continued growth of the team
  • Good public relations with swimmers, parents, YMCA, and community.
  • Support and implement a high-quality competitive swim program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
