About The Position

The State is accepting online applications for available Seasonal Range Safety Officer positions. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW), is seeking qualified individuals to serve as Range Safety Officers (RSOs I) at the Great Swamp Shooting Range (GSSR) in West Kingston, RI. RSOs will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all range patrons, enforcing established policies and procedures, and addressing unsafe behaviors in a prompt and professional manner. The position requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills to conduct safety briefings for new and renewing users, assist with permit processing, and provide accurate information regarding range policies. RSOs will maintain vigilant oversight during live fire sessions and ensure the security of the facility from unauthorized access. Please note, weekend and holiday coverage may be required, and the successful candidate may be asked to assist with additional responsibilities as needed. In addition to safety and customer service duties, RSOs will be tasked with range maintenance, including landscaping activities such as mowing, weeding, and applying organic herbicides, as well as routine cleaning and upkeep of shooting areas. Additional responsibilities include inspecting down-range areas, replacing consumable supplies, and securing equipment during inclement weather. Applicants must be able to perform effectively in a dynamic, high-traffic environment while prioritizing safety, maintaining facility standards, and supporting various operational tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Certification as a Range Safety Officer (RSO) from either NRA or USCCA is required or must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, along with CPR/First Aid/AED and Stop-the-Bleed certifications (also completable within 30 days with prior experience).
  • The position also requires strong communication, de-escalation skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, safety-critical environment, with the physical ability to navigate range berms and operate maintenance equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience as an RSO in either the public or private sector is preferred, along with knowledge of firearms (including muzzle-loading and archery) and the ability to diagnose and clear firearm malfunctions.
