About The Position

The Railyard Conductor is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of railcars in and around the railyard. The Railyard Conductor also performs routine inspection, repair, and maintenance of locomotives, railcars, and railroad tracks through the use of various hand tools and heavy machinery. The Railyard Conductor is required to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, reflective vests, safety boots, hearing protection and gloves where the Company requires.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of and familiarity with equipment such as tampers, regulators, torches, hammers, jacks, and other mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools. Welding experience.Fitting and fabrication experience. Existing knowledge of federal and state regulations as they relate to the railroad industry.
• Basic Microsoft Office skills.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Ability to fulfill requirements for obtaining and maintaining a conductor and engineer certification.

Responsibilities

• Perform Brakeman, Conductor or Engineer duties in a railyard with exposure to loud noise, dust, irritants, fumes, fuel odor, uneven ground, and other outdoor weather conditions.
• Collaborate with facility personnel on coordinating railcar movements
• Assist with lining switches, coupling/uncoupling railcars, connecting/disconnecting air hoses, applying/release handbrakes.
• Inspect locomotives before each tour of duty.
• Perform periodic locomotive maintenance, including adding/changing engine oil, sand and water, lubricating bearings, inspecting/replacing worn electric motor brushes within locomotive, changing filters, etc.
• Inspect railcars for mechanical defects, record findings, and estimate repair costs, or perform basic repairs. i.e. fixing safety appliances, changing brake shoes or air hoses etc.
• Perform track repair/maintenance work, including replacing ties, rails, bolts, spikes, and ballast.
• Operate various heavy machinery, including locomotives, trackmobile, backhoe, excavator, skidsteer, forklifts, etc.
• Prepare accurate reports as required by the Company, FRA, and other railroad governing agencies.
• Update rules and manuals to assure continuous compliance with all federal regulations.
• Attend rules and safety classes and ensure all rules are followed at all times.
• Observe all safety and security procedures; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
