Job Summary: The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position involves providing on-site roadway worker protection for activities around live railroad tracks. As an RWIC, you will be responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various forms of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role and effectively warn roadway workers of approaching trains.
  • Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification requirements.
  • Proficiency in radio procedures for communication with RWIC/EICs (Employee in Charge) and work groups.
  • Competence in conducting job briefings and placing railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Capability to install a railroad derail and apply the locking device.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of 3 years of Class 1 Railroad experience, preferably within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 to 5 years of railroad track maintenance experience.
  • Prior experience with a railway company.
  • Training in railway Track Inspection Guidelines or equivalent.
  • Certification in Amtrak Roadway Worker Protection and Operating Rules is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Jobsite Protection: Deliver required protection for each assignment, ensuring error-free compliance with rules, including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers. Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements and grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed.
  • Daily Briefings: Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on-site to ensure adherence to railroad safety requirements.
  • Documentation: Prepare and submit electronic forms such as job set-up forms, daily work reports, invoices, and other required reports.
  • Tool Handling: Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as needed.
  • Safety Training: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
  • Communication: Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned to meet business needs.
