About The Position

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position is responsible for providing on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks . The role involves job site coordination , dispatcher/train communication , and managing various types of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas .

Requirements

  • Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
  • Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualification requirements for protected roadway workers.
  • Proficiency in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge).
  • Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
  • Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications , including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite ).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of 2 years in track and/or construction experience

Nice To Haves

  • 2 - 5 years of track and/or construction experience
  • Prior experience working within a railway company
  • Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent.
  • CSX - FCI On-Track Worker and Operating Rules

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error-free and consistent with the rules.
  • Radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers
  • Ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements
  • Granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
  • Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure adherence to the safety requirements of the railroad.
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms , including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment , daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
  • Manage and place signs , derails , and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds , as needed throughout the day.
  • Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training
  • Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs
