About The Position

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position is responsible for on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks . This role involves job site coordination , dispatcher/train communication , and ensuring On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role.
  • Effective in warning roadway workers of approaching trains.
  • Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification requirements.
  • Proficient in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Engineers in Charge).
  • Capable of conducting job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs .
  • Skilled in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications , including email and text, as well as standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite ).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of 2 years of railroad experience .
  • CN On-Track Worker and Operating Rules .

Nice To Haves

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in track maintenance .
  • Prior experience working within a railway company .
  • Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Jobsite Protection: Provide the required protection on each assignment, ensuring error-free and rule-compliant operations. This includes radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Daily Job Briefings: Conduct daily briefings with all job site personnel and ensure adherence to railroad safety requirements.
  • Documentation: Prepare and submit required electronic forms , such as job set-up forms for flagging assignments, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
  • Handling Equipment: Manage and place signs, derails, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as needed throughout the day.
  • Safety Classes: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training .
  • Communication: Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
