About The Position

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet the required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
  • Effective in warning roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification requirements for protected roadway workers.
  • Proficient in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge).
  • Capable of conducting job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs .
  • Skilled in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications , including email and text, as well as standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite ).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 2 years of Class 1 Railroad experience within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department or construction/labor work.
  • Prior experience working within a railway company .
  • Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent.
  • Prior front-line first responder experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job set-up form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
  • Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day
  • Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
  • Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules
  • Other duties assigned or required to meet the business needs
