About The Position

American Track, a North American Rail Solutions company, is seeking a dedicated Railroad Laborer (Trackman) to join its field operations team. This role is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and replacing track components—including rails, ties, switches, and ballast—using hand tools and heavy equipment. The position begins as a Trackman, with the opportunity to advance to Machine Operator upon demonstrating the required skills and proficiency. Candidates must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week), with flexibility for overtime, on-call shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Relocation benefits are not provided.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Prior experience in railroad, heavy construction, or maintenance industries preferred but not required
  • Willingness and ability to travel to various job sites, including overnight stays and short-notice mobilization
  • Must pass a background check, pre-employment drug screening, and be subject to random drug testing
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and visual instructions
  • Respond appropriately to audible and visual signals and safety warnings
  • Recognize, avoid, and report potential hazards on the job site
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills; capable of working independently when needed
  • Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 100 lbs, climbing, kneeling, and working in varied outdoor conditions
  • Must be able to work at heights and maintain visual acuity for safety and task execution
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and sleet

Responsibilities

  • Carry and place track materials using standard Railroad maintenance track tools.
  • Install railroad tracks and embankments including special track work, road crossing signage, and rail lubricator.
  • Preform Railroad track maintenance and construction activities to include Changing rail, ties, building track, adjusting switches, etc.
  • Operate picks, shovels, and spike mauls for long periods of time.
  • Operate specialized hydraulic and air railroad power tools.
  • Attend after hour/ weekend callouts to repair damage done to tracks in the event of a derailment.
  • Assist in re-railing train cars.
  • Follow company and federal rules, policies, and procedures – wear required safety equipment, respond to and act on safety concerns.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
