Railroad Grade Crossing – Traffic Project Engineer Benesch’s Rail Division provides trusted expertise in rail grade crossing safety, rail signal systems, and traffic operations. Our Rail Grade Crossing team focuses on designing safe and efficient rail crossings, traffic signal preemption, and related traffic and transportation improvements for both public agencies and private clients. As a Traffic Project Engineer on the Rail Grade Crossing team, you will deliver technical leadership on rail-traffic and safety projects. You will manage traffic studies, prepare engineering analyses, coordinate plan development, and oversee the technical execution of deliverables. This role also includes mentoring junior staff, coordinating across disciplines, and ensuring designs meet client, safety, and regulatory standards. Location This position is part of Benesch’s national Rail Division, anchored in Fort Worth, TX, with hybrid work flexibility. Fully remote arrangements will be considered for qualified candidates. Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license; PTOE a plus
  • 5–10 years of experience in rail/traffic engineering, grade crossing design, or related transportation work
  • Experience working with public agencies and municipalities; state DOT experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of traffic operations, signal design, safety analyses, and roadway design
  • Proficiency with CADD, Synchro, GIS, and other traffic modeling or design software
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage project deliverables, and mentor staff
  • Excellent communication, client relations, and organizational skills

Responsibilities

  • Conduct traffic operations and safety analyses for rail grade crossings and associated roadway projects
  • Prepare preliminary and final design plans, specifications, and engineering calculations
  • Coordinate drafting of project deliverables and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior engineers
  • Build and maintain client relationships, including local and state transportation agencies
  • Represent Benesch at industry and professional events
